Four steps to beginning your medical residency in Germany

1) Learn the German language:

You can do that either in Germany or in your own country. Of course, it is quicker to learn a language in countries where it is spoken. The required German language level in most German states is called B2. You can take the tests from outside Germany. Some German states recognize certificates from certain institutes. From example, the state of Hessen recognizes only certificates from Goethe-Institute and Telc-Institute (Check the full details about Hessen in this official page here).

2) Start a clinical attachment (Hospitation) in a German hospital:

You train in German hospital in a specialty that you like. I never heard that you are required money. On the contrary, up to few years ago, some German hospital used to pay pocket money to training doctors. Currently, few hospitals still offer free accommodation and meals to training doctors. It is the best to train in the specialty that you want to specialize in. This will help you in your CV when applying for job positions. You can do email for that when you are outside of Germany. The invitation that you receive will help you obtain a visa to travel to Germany (See the requirement for getting a long-stay visa in Germany: “Required Papers for Applying for a Visa D (a long-term visa) from the German Embassy in Amman“. If you are in Germany, you can call hospitals or visit them personally to apply for a clinical attachment. Your chances are then higher of obtaining a Hospitation.

3) Start the process of recognition of your medical degree (Medical license: Approbation):

If you got your medical degree from a country that is a member of the EU, then get the medical license (Approbation) without a medical exam. Maybe you will be required to set for a medical German language test.

The required documents for medical license differs from one Approbation authority to another. There are 23 Approbation authorities. Some german states, like North Rhine-Westphalia, has more than one. North Rhine-Westphalia has five. The required papers are posted in the website of each approbation authority.  Most German states will require that you have a job position (residency) or at least, a Stellenzusage (promise to work), to give you the chance to apply for Approbation.

4) Start sending your application for hospitals that have vacant job positions:

There are tens of websites that show Ads for job positions. Click here for a Google search for “Arzt Stellenangebote“. You will be interviewed by the hospital. If they want you, most will sign a contract with you after the interview. Some will put you under a testing period (Probezeit) of few months before signing a contract with you.
